History Longwood Florida

Longwood is a city on the way to Orlando, located as part of Seminole County, Florida. It's about 30 minutes from the Orlando International Airport and 25-30 minutes from all the major attractions. Longwood was established in the 1870s. With the frost of the late 1800's and the crops not improving until 1920 Longwood lost some of its settlers. In 1923 Longwood was incorporated as a city, and the Old Dixie Highway were constructed near where County Road 427 is located today. In 1924 Lyman School was opened for a 1-12 school, where the current Milwee Middle School is today. In 1969 the construction of the current Lyman High School was completed. With the Depression coming development stopped. The City's only bank failed in 1932 and Longwood sought, unsuccessfully, to disincorporate. By the end of the 1940 Longwood's population was 406. Current population according to the 2000 census is 13,700.
